Workshop on "Coupling Technologies for Earth System Modelling : Today and Tomorrow" - CERFACS,Toulouse (France) - Dec 15th to 17th 2010

CERFACS and the Georgia Institute of Technology organized a workshop on the theme of “Coupling Technologies for Earth System Modelling : Today and Tomorrow”. The first thrust of the workshop was to assess the state of the art in ESM coupling frameworks. The second thrust was to discuss a vision for coupling in the year 2020. The discussions should lead to a white paper outlining the requirements of the next generation coupling frameworks.

CERFACS and the Georgia Institute of Technology organized a workshop on the theme of “Coupling Technologies for Earth System Modelling : Today and Tomorrow”. The first thrust of the workshop was to assess the state of the art in ESM coupling frameworks, including our current assumptions about coupled geophysical models, the quality of the capabilities provided, and the range of software architectures currently employed. Our object was to explore and more deeply understand the trade-offs involved in the different approaches currently used.
The second thrust was to discuss a vision for coupling in the year 2020. This involves positing what new requirements will arise in the next ten years and how existing coupling frameworks must evolve to meet those needs. Some other topics of interest included for example:

  • Dealing efficiently with massively parallel platforms and other new computing architectures
  • High- and low-level data abstractions used in coupling frameworks
  • Approaches for facilitating framework adoption and migration
  • Flexibility in coupled model configuration

The discussions should lead to a white paper outlining the requirements of the next generation coupling frameworks.

Workshop Proceedings

Workshop abstracts and talks

The first day of the workshop was open to everyone. It was devoted to detailed presentations of the current coupling technologies from developers of ESMF, FMS, CESM1-CPL7, BFG, OASIS and PALM. The next two days involved a focussed, in-depth discussion on the different topics of interest mentioned above or additional ones proposed by the workshop attendees. In order to maintain in-depth discussions, space was somewhat limited for the final two days of the workshop.
