The European Network for Earth System modelling (ENES) launched its first European Earth System and Climate Modelling School (E2SCMS) with support from the ISENES FP7 project (http://is.enes.org). The UK’s National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS; Reading, UK) and the Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie (MPI-M; Hamburg, Germany) lead E2SCMS, which was held on the Greek island of Kos. E2SCMS is merging two very successful schools, the NCAS Climate Modelling Summer School (http://ncasweb.leeds. ac.uk/climatesummerschool) and the MPI-M Earth System Modelling Schools (http://issmes.enes.org). A next European Earth System and Climate Modelling School is considered for 2014 (E2SCMS14?).

Earth System and Climate Models are complex mathematical tools developed to help scientists improve understanding of the natural environment around us. These scientifically and computationally advanced models and methods allow scientists to investigate the behaviour of climate processes and phenomena on a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. These models can also help scientists to assess the impact of human activities on the Earth system through climate scenario projections. Simulation results can assist societal and economic decision-making, from public weather forecasting, to resource management and natural disaster risk analysis.

School participants attend a series of lectures and discussions alongside practical modelling and data processing exercises, which include interpretation and presentation of simulation results. Attendance of international experts in Earth system and climate modelling ensure an advanced and stimulating learning environment for participants. The course schedule, lecture list and details of participating senior scientists are available at http://schools.enes.org.
