Key Dates


When is the school? 

The school will start at 10am on Thursday 9 June 2016 and will finish at 8pm on Tuesday 21 June 2016

When should I apply?

You should apply as soon as possible. The deadline for applications has been extended to 1100 UTC on Thursday 31 March 2016. This will allow applicants time to collate the required supporting documentation and references in order to submit a complete application.

You must ensure that you also obtain a Reference Letter before the deadline as this must be included in your complete application.

When will I hear whether if my application has been successful?

Applications will be assessed after the application deadline. We aim to inform applicants about the status of their application in the week commencing Monday 18 April 2016

When do I need to pay for my place or accommodation?

Confirmation of places and full payment for accommodation and fees (if applicable) must be received by Wednesday 4 May 2016.

Venues


Where is the school?

The 3rd E2SCMS is being hosted by the University of Helsinki, with local support by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI, Helsinki) and the Finnish supercomputing center (CSC, Espoo).

Lectures will take place at the University of Helsinki Kumpula Campus, Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2a, 00560, Helsinki

The 2 day excursion to the Hyytiälä SMEAR Field Station will take place at Hyytiäläntie 124, 35500, Korkeakoski

Where will I stay?

We are currently investigating good value accommodation options close to the University of Helsinki and Helsinki City Centre. To help keep costs down, students will normally share a room with another student of the same gender. Students are responsible for the cost of their accommodation. More information will be provided soon.

Can I organize my own accommodation?

Students may organize their own accommodation, but it is highly recommended that students stay in accommodation organised by the school in order to benefit fully from the course.

Students should consider the busy timetable and must ensure that they are able to arrive on time each morning for the start of sessions.

The E2SCMS Administration will accept no responsibility for accommodation not organised by the school.

Costs


What will I have to pay?

There are no registration fees applicants (regardless of nationality) attending the 3rd E2SCMS from an EU institution. Lunch, refreshments, and the two-day excursion to Hyytiälä are provided for free.

For applicants (regardless of nationality) attending from a non-EU institution, the cost for attending the school will be £1950.00 + Accommodation.

All students are responsible for the cost of their travel, accommodation, breakfast, and some evening meals.

I am a student of EU nationality attending an institution located within the EU, will I have to pay the fee?

No, there are no registration fees for applicants (regardless of nationality) attending the 3rd E2SCMS from an EU institution. Lunch, refreshments, and the two-day excursion to Hyytiälä are provided for free.

You will have to pay for accommodation, or organise your own accommodation in Helsinki.

I am a student of EU nationality attending an institution located outside of the EU, will I have to pay the fee?

Yes, for all applicants (regardless of nationality) attending from a non-EU institution, the cost for attending the school will be £1950.00 + Accommodation.

I am a student of non-EU nationality attending an institution located within the EU, will I have to pay the fee?

No, there are no registration fees for applicants (regardless of nationality) attending the 3rd E2SCMS from an EU institution. Lunch, refreshments, and the two-day excursion to Hyytiälä are provided for free.

You will have to pay for accommodation, or organise your own accommodation in Helsinki.

How much is the cost of accommodation?

We are currently investigating good value accommodation options close to the University of Helsinki, Kumpula Campus.

To help keep costs down, students will normally share a room with another student of the same gender. It is estimated that students will pay approximately £500.00 for 14 nights accommodation, including breakfast, in a twin room.

Students are responsible for the cost of their accommodation.

How much is the cost of travel?

Students are responsible for the cost of their flights to and from Helsinki, as well as any travel around the city. Students should seek support from their own institution, employer, or supervisor. More travel information will be provided soon.

Are there any bursaries or grants to support student travel or accommodation costs?

In exceptional circumstances, a small number of accommodation and boarding grants will be available upon separate application. Applicants should indicate in their application if they wish to apply for an accommodation and boarding grant, and must also submit an additional justification document with their application.

There are no grants to support the cost of travel to and from, or around Helsinki. Students should seek support from their own institution, employer, or supervisor. More travel information will be provided soon.
