Project Description

STORM is a community effort aiming at multi-century climate change simulations with the global coupled atmosphere-ocean model ECHAM6-JSBACH/MPIOM at the cutting-edge horizontal and vertical resolution.

Scientific Goals

  • STORM will address the question of how climate and climate sensitivity will change by resolving oceanic meso-scale eddies and partially resolving gravity waves in the atmosphere and the ocean
  • STORM will facilitate estimates of climate change at the very local scales by  providing high-resolution global simulation for nesting regional climate models with even higher resolutions
  • STORM will initialize studies on the variability and change of a number of climate-impact relevant processes, such as changes in extremes of surface climate, intensity and frequency of storm-related sea-level surges, up-welling in coastal areas, their past variability and the influence of anthropogenic climate change, and their relationships to the large-scale counterparts
