Dear colleague,

we would like to draw your attention to the 3rd International Conference on Data Analysis and Modeling in Earth Sciences (DAMES 2012), which is to be held from 8-10 October 2012 in Potsdam, Germany (http://dames.pik-potsdam.de/).

During the last decades, the increasing public and scientific interest in geoscientific problems has triggered enormous efforts to obtain, analyze and interpret data that contain substantial information about the dynamics of the complex system ''Earth''. For this purpose, novel techniques not only for recording data, but also for their statistical evaluation and data-based modeling have been developed.

Following the great success of the first two meetings of this kind, the DAMES 2012 conference shall bring together researchers dealing with data analysis and modeling in all fields of Earth Sciences, promoting the exchange of knowledge on both methodological developments and Earth Science applications. Specific topics may come from all fields of Earth Sciences, including (but not limited to) atmospheric sciences, present-day and palaeo-climatology, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, geodynamics, seismology, and solar-terrestrial physics. We furthermore encourage contributions on applied and cross-disciplinary topics such as environmental risk analysis, electricity networks, or sustainability sciences.

We are happy to announce that DAMES 2012 will feature keynote presentations on various aspects of geoscientific data analysis and modeling given by some leading international experts in their fields:

  • Karimuri Ashok (Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, India)
  • Henrique Barbosa (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil)
  • Armin Bunde (Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany)
  • Christian Franzke (British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, United Kingdom)
  • Shlomo Havlin (Bar-Ilan University, Israel)
  • Valerio Lucarini (University of Hamburg, Germany)
  • Miguel Mahecha (Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, Jena, Germany)

We cordially invite you to register as a participant of DAMES 2012 and upload an abstract for a contributed oral and poster presentation via our conference website (http://dames.pik-potsdam.de/index.php?a=register). For details on the location, deadlines and fees as well as preliminary information on the  conference program, please see our website.

In case of any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Please feel also free to forward this email to potentially interested students or colleagues. If you would like to be removed from our mailing list, please send us a short reply email with the subject "remove address".

We are looking forward to seeing you at DAMES 2012.

Yours sincerely,

The DAMES 2012 Organizing Committee
